Paolo Basso, Sommeliers International - Clos Marey-Monge "Terroirs" 2017

Sommeliers International is a magazine dedicated to a wide audience of both professionals and well-informed connoisseurs. Respect for the cultural traditions, discovery of the neighbour countries and analysis of the methods … All subjects are closely examined by the most famous journalists, as long as magic happens, as passion is universal.

Last May, renowned Swiss-Italian sommelier Paolo Basso visited Château de Pommard. In presence of our winemaker, Emmanuel Sala, he tasted our newly released Clos Marey-Monge 2017 cuvées. Here are his comments.

Clos Marey-Monge “Chantrerie” 2017

“A pale ruby color with garnet reflections. The nose, initially quite discreet, opens with further oxygenation showing notes of smoke, kirsch-soaked cherries, cloves and green peppercorns. The palate is rich, powerful and savory with a pleasant touch of sweetness all structured with firm, yet well rounded tannins. The finish is savory and persistent.”

Clos Marey-Monge “75 Rangs” 2017

“A pale ruby color with garnet reflections. The typical intense and complex aromas of Pinot Noir are found here, replete with notes of cherry, red currant and bay leaf. The first impressions on the palate are dense and savory with an expressive and structured mid palate. The tannins are clearly defined, backed by a persistent and intense character that envelops both the palate and the nose after swallowing.”

Clos Marey-Monge “Grands Champs” 2017

“A pale ruby color with garnet reflections. The nose is very discrete: opening on smoky, leathery and red cherry aromas, typical to Pinot Noir. On the palate, the texture is dense and powerful with a rich mid palate, complemented with powdery fine-grained tannins and a long ardent finish.”

Clos Marey-Monge “Les Paules” 2017

“A pale ruby color with garnet reflections. The nose shows vibrant and fruity wild strawberry and woody notes alongside a touch of green peppercorn and redcurrant. The immediate sensation of the wine on the palate is full-bodied, enveloping and dense. The mid-palate is generous and inviting with present tannins, finishing with a pleasant drop of bitterness.”

Clos Marey-Monge “Micault” 2017

“A pale ruby color with garnet reflections. The typical Pinot Noir nose expresses smoke, leather and red cherries. On the palate, there is a wonderful volume that is quite muscular in style with refined tannins, finishing with a pleasant touch of bitterness. “
