Our Stories

Chantrerie

Chantrerie is the spirit of Clos Marey-Monge and home to many of the Clos’ century-old vines. This plot is proof that with old age comes wisdom.

EQUAL TO GRAND CRU

Separated from Simone by a narrow path once lined with fruit trees, the living soils of ancient Chantrerie makes us supremely proud. Equal to the revered grand cru terroirs of Côte de Nuits appellations Richebourg and Musigny, Chantrerie’s soil composition distinguishes itself from the Clos’ other parcels by the large internal surface area of its clays, a measurement of 657m2/g. A grand cru level measurement, so the resulting wine has all the characteristics of a grand cru. Great power allied with delicacy, an imposing yet velvety, savory tannic undertone. At once rich, deep and aerial, wines produced from Chantrerie’s terroir provide the final blend with nobility and grace.

OLDEST VINES IN THE FIELD

Planted in 1906, the vines of Chantrerie are also some of the oldest in the Côte de Beaune. It’s no surprise that Emmanuel, our winemaker, likes to think of this plot as ageless, a terrain beyond time.

Comprised of four individual plots – Vieille 1, Vieille 2, Jeune 1 and Jeune 2 – the overall surface area of Chantrerie is 2,467 hectares, or approximately 14 per cent of Clos Marey-Monge.

SCIENCE AND INTUITION

In 2009, a chemical and biological analysis conducted by Claude and Lydia Bourguignon confirmed that Chantrerie, along with her neighbouring plot Simone, contains one of the highest clay density levels on record in Burgundy – a genuine curiosity, and a rarity, for the Côte de Beaune. Not only is Chantrerie’s clay-limestone soil impressive to look at, at one of our onsite cannisters, which reveal the terroirs multi-strata composition – the plot’s location, situated in the middle of Clos Marey-Monge at a slight inclination, allows a 360-degree view that encompasses all 200,000 vines, as well as the ground’s two stately Châteaux. A view not to be missed.

Combined with the Simone terroir to create the Simone cuvée, Chantrerie provides the final wine with all the elegance and class of a grand cru – the pure distillation of its birthplace and full of depth and profound complexity.
