The seven distinct soil compositions of Clos Marey-Monge are remarkable multi-strata of iron-rich clay and limestone. They provide our 200,000 vines with all the diversity and strength required to turn dirt into something truly delectable.
150 Million Years of History
Clos Marey-Monge sits on top of the Avant-Dheune Valley dejection cone, a geological structure that allows even greater Pinot Noir growing conditions to flourish. The cherished terroir of Pommard, and its 27 identified Climats, have been cultivated and carefully preserved for thousands of years by the many protectors of the land. But it is the 150 million year history of the earth and dirt beneath these famed soils that has contributed most to Clos Marey-Monge’s enduring popularity.
Simone
Nestled at the foot of the Château de Pommard, the vines producing our cuvée Simone grow on remarkable soil. With one of the highest internal surface densities of clay in Burgundy, this Pinot Noir is delicate and intense. Planted in 1986, these vines produce a rich, complex, and rare cuvée.
Chantrerie
The vines producing our Chantrerie cuvée are some of the oldest of our Clos Marey-Monge. They grow on marly-clay soils with one of the largest internal surface areas of clay in the Côte d’Or, allowing us to produce a dark, rich and deep Pinot Noir with silky tannins.
Nicolas-Joseph
Our Nicolas-Joseph cuvée is produced from vines growing on flat limestone rocks with red clay. We obtain a fleshy, complex Pinot Noir with intense red fruits and sweet, silky tannins.
Grands Esprits
Plantées entre 1970 et 1980, les vignes produisant notre cuvée Grands Esprits s’épanouissent sur un sol caillouteux et riche en calcaire. Elles donnent naissance à un Pinot Noir droit et complexe, taillé pour la garde.
75 Rangs
The vines producing our 75 Rangs cuvée are planted on soils rich in magnesium, sodium, and potassium. At nearly 60 years old, they produce a Pinot Noir with prominent mineral notes and a trademark saline finish.
Vivant-Micault
The vines producing our cuvée Vivant-Micault were originally planted as an English garden. They grow on fine alluvial formations from the Avant-Dheune river and create a fruity Pinot Noir that is particularly enjoyable when young.
Émilie
In 2016 a new lady was planted at the furthest eastern point of the vineyard. The composition is a clay-limestone (36% clay) surface with a sandy texture. Stones of rounded gravel and rare pebbles descrease with depth. Inspired by Émilie Marey-Monge, the industrious woman of Château de Pommard, this sacred ground was previously the backbone of our wine’s for more than 60 years.
Celebrated Classifications
It was Professor Jules Lavalle’s most celebrated work, The History and Statistics of the Great Wines of the Côte d’Or, published in 1855, that forever changed how Burgundy winemakers perceived the earth beneath their feet.
In Sync with the Seasons
Clos Marey-Monge is in perfect symbiosis with the four seasons. Throughout the year, the vineyard is a revolving door of earthly colors – brown, green, gold, red – a daily reminder that Clos Marey-Monge is alive with life and purpose.
