Rootstock 2018 Exclusive Interview: Yeast

Lyon-based quartet Yeast make an incredible roar on record and on stage. Pulsating with rhythms and soaring, if melancholic, melodies, as showcased on their 2016 EP Water, this emerging indie pop and rock band are beginning to make big waves on the local Lyon and Paris scene. Comprising of Leo (singer, guitar), Arthur (guitar), Judicaël (bass) and Cyril (drums), Yeast are renowned for their intense and energetic live performances,  fascinating music videos – you must check out ‘Walls’ –  and powerful, colorful pop songs that are future radio anthems. To celebrate the group returning to fine recording form in 2018 with their newest collection of songs, Dust of Light, and their much-anticipated upcoming Rootstock 2018 performance, we caught up with the band to discuss where their collective heads are at…. and what happens next…

“Holidays will have to wait!”

Q. Hi Yeast. Tell us about your Summer  – what are you guys up to right now?

“Well, it’s going be a pretty busy summer for us as we will hit several festivals, including, of course the very nice festivals Rootstock and Rock in Évreux as well as play gigs all around France – in our hometown Lyon and Paris – and Europe between June and August. But we’re also preparing the release of our third EP, which is planned to release in late September! So, it means we have to create and embrace a new live set, new songs and new energies and atmosphere. Holidays will have to wait!”

Yeast: Emotive rockers from Lyon

Q.What makes for an awesome Yeast show?

“What we appreciate the most when we play a show is this exchange of energies that can happen between us and the audience. It doesn’t have to be something big or frenetic, as long as we feel the crowd responding to our music in their own way. It is also very important for us to connect with the stage and venue crews – the more friends we make before and during the show the better the show will be.”

“We will be playing some new songs…”

Q. Can your fans expect any surprises at Rootstock 2018?

“Yes they can! We will be playing some new songs, including some rearranged old songs written especially for this live show. Also, we are good friends with Elodie and Hadrien in Holy Two who will play on the same day as us at the festival. Something pretty fun could happen on this occasion – you never know!”

Debut: The band’s first EP, Someone You Can’t Have

Q. What was the most recent best gig you played and why?

“Six months ago, we played with the famous French band Her (shortly before the death of that band’s singer Simon Carpentier from cancer, aged 27), and it was a really incredible gig. Why? Firstly, it happened at the really amazing venue that we love, L’Epicerie Moderne, and it was sold out with a crowd of beautiful people who really just loved our music. And also because Her themselves put on a hell of a show – so it became this perfect night for us.”

Q. Tell us a secret ….

“Later in the year, we’re going to play some shows in partnership with the car brand Citroën, with whom we have just signed with for an upcoming commercial. It’s very exciting.”
