With its bright and intense ruby color lined with crimson reflections, our Clos Marey-Monge Monopole 2017 is a complex, generous and flavorful Pinot Noir. The nose shows aromas of powder and red fruits, as well as notes of smokiness, all bringing great complexity to the wine. The palate is fresh, revealing firm tannins and a well-rounded structure. Long and sapid while aerial, the finale unveils a vibrant, energetic, and complex Pommard drinkable today, but also ageable for decades.
Now to 25 years
The largest monopole in Burgundy benefits from a unique environment protected by a two-meters-high stone wall. The complexity of our vineyard’s soils come from the alluvial, sand and gravels carried along by the Avant-Dheune river thousand years ago. Our blend of the seven cuvées from the limestone and clay-rich terroirs of the clos creates a deep, elegant, and sophisticated wine.
AGE OF VINES
20 to 120 years
Hand-harvested grapes, hand-sorted on a vibrating table. 100% de-stemmed, placed into stainless steel fermentation vats by gravity flow. Weeks-long maceration, minimal pumping-over and punching-down. Pressing in pneumatic press. Placed in French oak barrels for aging on fine lees. Not filtered.
September 4 to 11, 2017
16 months in 40% new French oak barrels
The terroir of Clos Marey-Monge – Simone, Chantrerie, Les Paules, Grands Champs, 75 Rangs, Micault, and Émilie – are each bestowed with distinct soils and microclimates. Hand-picked, fermented and barrel-aged separately, the juice from each plot is kept apart. But then on one magical day, we blend precise proportions from each plot, creating Clos Marey-Monge Monopole, our purest expression of the vintage.
A rich, garnet color illuminates the glass while rolling waves of black fruits, fresh rose, humus, and graphite are found on the nose. Clos Marey-Monge Monopole’s medium body and high acidity represent the classic Pommard, but the velvety tannins and a lingering and slightly salty finish, with soft notes of curry spices and white pepper, goes further.
Six Bottles of Clos Marey-Monge Monopole 2017
The largest monopole in Burgundy, Clos Marey‑Monge is a collection of different micro-climates and soil types. Each of our seven terroirs – Simone, Les Paules, Grands Champs, Chantrerie, 75 Rangs, Micault, and Émilie – is a different composition of limestone, iron-rich clay, alluvium and other minerals essential to Pinot Noir.
