2020 Sommelier Wine Awards

The Sommelier Wine Awards is the only competition to be aimed solely at the on-trade. Judged by a top panel of leading sommeliers and on-trade drinks buyers, the competition rewards the best wines available to restaurants, bars and hotels in the UK and beyond. SWA judges are required to be working in the on-trade, whether it’s as a sommelier or wine buyer in a restaurant/hotel, or as a consultant developing wine lists.

The Sommelier Wine Awards 2020 celebrates wines from all corners of the globe in its most diverse year yet. Now in its fourteenth year, the competition is judged by Master Sommeliers, Masters of Wines and some of the best names in the world of wine, including Director of Wine at Ten Trinity Square, Jan Konetzki; Wine Development Manager at Le Cordon Bleu, Matthieu Longuère MS; and Director at Vinoteca, Charlie Young.

Our wines were part of the beautiful selection of awarded wines:

Château de Pommard Clos Marey-Monge Monopole 2017: Silver Medal

‘A superbly elegant Pinot Noir, although still quite young.’ Gary Newborough, The Aristologist.

‘There’s finesse on the nose, developing a gamey fruitiness, leading to a muscular palate with super tannins and excellent fruit. A big Burgundy that delivers on the nose and palate.’ Michael Driscoll, Careys Manor Hotel & SenSpa.

Famille Carabello-Baum Bourgogne Chardonnay 2017: Silver Medal

‘Delicate oaky-toastiness is well-integrated with the fruit here, with notes of yellow apples and lemons.’ Juan Manuel Marcos Perez, The Gilbert Scott Restaurant.

‘Ripe apricot, mandarin, fresh butter, vanilla and oak. Polished and elegantly creamy. A solid classic.’ Jan Konetzki, team leader.

Famille Carabello-Baum Ladoix Premier Cru « Les Gréchons » 2017: Silver Medal

‘Great length and complexity, with lemons, limes and vanilla, and a creamy texture.’ Immacolata Cannavo, Hakkasan Mayfair.

‘Pronounced on the nose, with concentrated zesty stone and tropical fruit, along with cream, butter, brioche, nuts and sweet spices, with a long-lasting finish and some saline minerality.’ Savvas Symeonidis, Goodman Restaurant Mayfair.

Famille Carabello-Baum Meursault 2017: Silver Medal

‘Really complex and layered on the nose, with lemon curd, pastry, cream, red apple and spiced peaches, and a palate that’s very well-structured. Excellent harmony, with great acidity to carry things through.’ Sam Weatherill, Etch. by Steven Edwards.

‘Elegant and round, with hints of cinnamon and vanilla, touches of cream, and good fruit concentration.’ Matteo Furlan, The Ritz London.

We want to thank all the judges for these incredible medals. See you again in 2021!
