Master Medal: Global Pinot Noir Masters 2017

Clos Marey-Monge Monopole 2014
Score: Master Medal 97 / 100

Clos Marey-Monge Monopole 2013
Score: Master Medal 95 / 100

In February 2017, esteemed drinks trade publication The Drinks Business announced the results of its popular and prestigious Global Pinot Noir Masters 2017 Awards. Now in its fifth year, the event recognizes and rewards the greatest Pinot Noirs in the world.

Judged blind by a panel of Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and senior buyers ; arguably some of the highest calibre super tasters around, therefore guaranteeing international fame and fortune for all winning wines ; the Pinot Noirs that are considered the most excellent receive Bronze, Silver and Gold medals.

For the absolute pinnacle of achievement, for wines that go above and beyond the call of delectability, a small selection of the competing wines are awarded the “Master Medal”.

Naturally, Clos Marey-Monge Monopole 2014 and Clos Marey-Monge Monopole 2013 won the Master Medal, and were singled out in February’s report. “Of course, no report on the world’s great Pinot Noirs would be complete without mentioning Burgundy ; and it was pleasing to see that where the region did compete, it scored well, with two wines from Château de Pommard proving among the six Master winners in total for this year’s tasting.”

An Exceptional Vintage: 2014 attains the Master Medal in 2017

“We are pleased to announce that out of more than 200 wines presented this year, Château de Pommard has received the highest possible qualification: The Master Medal. Both Clos Marey-Monge 2013 and Clos Marey-Monge 2014 are honored with this title which is reserved for wines that scored above 95 / 100.”

This year’s judges were a stellar bunch of tastebuds too, with palates that are no doubt hard to please:

  • Jonathan Pedley MW
  • Michael Palij MW
  • Richard Bampfield MW
  • Clive Barlow MW
  • Matthew Forster MW
  • Patrick Schmitt MW
  • Will Heslop
  • Jose Gonzalez Godoy
  • Michelle Cherruti Kowal MW
  • Patricia Stefanowicz MW

We thank you, one and all, for the Master Medal.

See you again in 2018!

About the Global Pinot Noir Masters 2017
In a crowded wine-competition arena, the drinks business Global pinot noir Masters stands out for its assessment of wines purely by grape variety rather than by region. Divided only by price bracket and, for ease of judging, style too ; the blind-tasting format allowed wines to be assessed without prejudice about their country of origin. The best wines were awarded medals that ranged from Bronze through to Gold, as well as Master ; the ultimate accolade, given only to exceptional wines in the tasting. The wines were judged by a cherrypicked group of Masters of Wine and one Master Sommeliers on 10 February at The Bumpkin in London’s South Kensington.
