Our Clos Marey-Monge 2023 Vintage
A Year of Contrast and Character
In Burgundy, every vintage tells a unique story. The 2023 vintage is one of resilience, shaped by dramatic climate contrasts that pushed our vines and our expertise to the limit.

In the Vineyards: A Year of Challenges and Resilience
The 2023 season was a true test of endurance. It began in early April with an unusually early bud break, sparking fears of spring frost. Fortunately, our vineyards were spared, allowing us to continue with canopy management in peace.
But just as we breathed a sigh of relief, May brought a new challenge—a damp, overcast month that heightened the risk of mildew. Persistent rains kept us on edge until mid-May, when the long-awaited sun returned. This shift in weather helped preserve the health of our vines, setting the stage for a promising season ahead.
The season started on a high note, with June and July bringing perfect conditions for healthy vine growth and a promising harvest. But summer had its own agenda. Heatwaves and storms took turns testing the resilience of our grapes, while in the more sheltered areas of Clos Marey-Monge, humidity attracted fruit flies. Our response was swift—harvesting at just the right moment to safeguard quality. The harvest began on September 5 under high temperatures, ensuring optimal ripeness. By September 16, our work in Clos Marey-Monge was complete. The yields were generous yet perfectly aligned with the standards of the Pommard appellation—proof that patience and precision always pay off.

Craftsmanship in the Cellar
Upon arrival at the winery, our commitment to excellence continued with a meticulous sorting process, ensuring only the finest grapes made it into the vats. The warm weather in September posed its own set of challenges, requiring our team’s unwavering focus on fermentation management, particularly temperature regulation. Through careful monitoring and precise adjustments, we were able to maintain a seamless fermentation process.
Thanks to our native yeasts, fermentation proceeded effortlessly, with impeccable sugar assimilation. The pristine condition of our vats allowed for a sulfur-free vinification, fostering a rapid extraction of vibrant aromas and rich color. These wines boast remarkable depth, with seamlessly integrated tannins and a delicate bitterness that imparts a refreshing elegance.
Macerations spanned 13 to 23 days, each carefully tailored to the distinctive profile of the cuvée. While we employed various techniques on the grape skins—gentle punch-downs and pump-overs—our preferred method remained infusion, capturing the purest expression of the fruit. With a generous harvest at hand, we embraced the opportunity to explore innovative techniques, such as cold pre-fermentation maceration and rack-and-return, to elevate our craft.

To ensure the purity of the wines, almost all of the reds were pressed with a vertical press, minimizing crushing and ensuring a delicate extraction. The malolactic fermentations were swift, and the aging process took place entirely in oak barrels, with the exception of a few hectoliters maturing in clay amphorae. This experimentation proved particularly promising and inspired us to create a new cuvée, entirely aged in amphora. We are excited to share this unique cuvée with you in the months ahead.
