A Journey Into The World Of Wine With Josh Orr MS, Director of Education at Broadbent Selections
People often find themselves on unexpected paths in the vast world of wine. Josh Orr MS (Master Sommelier), Director of Education at Broadbent Selections, is one great example, as his journey into the world of wine took him from the ranches of Utah to the prestigious title of Master Sommelier.
Josh caught the “wine bug,” as he likes to say, during his years at a university in California where he was studying sports medicine. After completing his degree in kinesiology, Josh chose to turn his efforts towards the wine industry, engaging in the campus wine club alongside working as a tour guide and in a wine bar. His fascination with the collaborative nature of wine -with culture or food, for example- led him to pursue his education, travel to Europe, and spend time in France.
Today, Josh is the Director of Education at Broadbent Selections, one of the leading global fine wine importers in the United States and a key partner for Château de Pommard. Founded in 1996 by Bartholomew Broadbent, the company played a significant part in Josh’s wine journey. Specializing in family-owned wineries with a deep connection to the land and the vineyards, Broadbent has grown organically since then. “We have a diverse portfolio of over 50 producers across 15 countries,” says Josh. “From my end of things, I love this diversity, representing producers from Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Lebanon, or New Zealand. That’s the kind of world I love operating in!”
As Director of Education, Josh’s role is to share his wealth of knowledge internally with his team as well as externally through consumer events and educational courses. His background as a Master Sommelier adds another layer of expertise, allowing him to provide valuable insights into the intricacies of the different wine regions, varietals, and production techniques. “I relish those opportunities because it keeps things fresh,” he adds “It keeps me learning and actively pursuing my dream career.”
Château de Pommard holds a special place in Broadbent’s portfolio when it comes to Burgundy’s wine region. As the only producer from the Côte de Beaune, Château de Pommard stands out for its commitment to biodynamic viticulture and transparent winemaking. “Château de Pommard offers a unique glimpse into Burgundy’s terroir and winemaking traditions,” Josh adds. “People get easily fascinated by the soil studies and the ‘lieux-dits’ that are part of the Monopole.”
When asked about the evolving landscape of the wine industry, Josh identifies shifting consumption patterns and emerging trends as both challenges and opportunities. “There’s been a fairly consistent trend over the last several years in terms of decreased overall consumption in the US market,” Josh says.” Part of that is shifting generations. The older generations are very loyal, but the younger generations are veering away from wine and alcohol in general.” He believes the wine industry will have to adapt and innovate to remain relevant.
However, amidst these challenges, Josh sees important changes happening, especially when it comes to sustainability, transparency, and authenticity. Today, consumers seek wines that taste good and align with their values and principles.
