From Hospitality to the Heart of Wine: Mario’s Story
Mario’s journey into the world of wine began with a strong background in hospitality, where he quickly developed a passion for wine. “I started my career in the hospitality industry as a hotel management professional and soon realized that wine would play a central role in my path,” he shares. Eager to deepen his expertise, Mario completed both sommelier training and a degree in business management. Today, as a sommelier at KierdorfWein, he manages the distribution of a carefully curated selection of wines to Germany’s high-end gastronomy scene.
Reflecting on his first memorable encounters with wine, Mario reveals how Burgundy left a lasting impression on him. “Some wines are certainly to blame,” he laughs. “The first aged Riesling, the first mature Bordeaux, but above all, the wines of Burgundy, which fascinated me early on.” Influential mentors during his hospitality training guided Mario toward a professional career in wine, paving the way for his current role.

As a sommelier at KierdorfWein, Mario curates a diverse selection of Burgundy wines. KierdorfWein is instrumental in promoting Burgundy wines in Germany and is a founding member of the Cercle des Mécènes des Climats du Vignoble de Bourgogne, which works to preserve Burgundy’s unique terroirs. “Our goal is to represent the full breadth and diversity of the region,” Mario explains. “We feature both larger and smaller producers, well-known and lesser-known appellations, as well as established traditional estates and innovative newcomers like Château de Pommard.”
With a portfolio that includes over 80 different Burgundy producers, KierdorfWein’s reach is extensive. “I primarily work with sommeliers from top restaurants across Germany to highlight the finest wines from Burgundy. In addition to Burgundy, our portfolio includes wines from Champagne, Rhône, and the Loire Valley, along with top producers from Germany, Italy, Australia, Spain, and the U.S.”

When asked where he sees the greatest opportunities for Burgundy wines in Germany, Mario points to metropolitan areas with vibrant dining scenes. “Cities like Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Munich are worth highlighting,” he says. “These large cities, with their tourism and international audiences, are ideal markets for Burgundy wines. Good restaurants nationwide are always interested in premium wines, and Burgundy remains a region of enduring relevance for connoisseurs.”
The Value of Wine Education
Mario strongly advocates wine education, believing it is essential for cultivating a passion for wine and fostering future wine lovers. “Educating the next generation is particularly important to maintain connections with future buyers and wine drinkers,” he shares.

The Challenges Ahead: Wine Industry Outlook for 2025 and Beyond
Looking ahead, Mario sees both challenges and opportunities for the wine industry, particularly concerning price stability and consumer trends. “The biggest threat in 2025 will likely be a decline in prices in the premium segment and continued shrinking sales at the entry-level,” he warns. Mario believes the industry must adapt to these trends to remain vibrant and relevant.
