2023 Red Wine of the Year!

2023 may be on its last legs but the accolades for our clos wines keep on coming. Fresh from our inclusion in the Top 100 Luxury Lifestyle Brands and our staggering review from Dr Jamie Goode, now we have been awarded 2023 Red Wine of the Year by prolific wine writer and competition judge Tom Cannavan.

The cuvée of choice is the Clos Marey-Monge Monopole 2020, which wowed with its spicy aromas with “pot-pourri notes of dried flowers and herbs, over dusty raspberry moving into black fruits.”

“In the mouth the firm tannins of this young wine grip, the acidity adds another thread of sinew, but deep fruit is locked within.”

It sits firmly in the outstanding category in Tom’s scoring system with a fabulous 94 but that may not be the end of the road.

“This will repay cellaring for sure, and may well notch up an extra point or two with time,” he says. “But in its rich but firm style it is already delicious.”

Tom in the expert behind wine-pages.com, which he launched back in 1995.

Tom is no stranger to awards himself, having picked up the 2018 International Wine Communicator of the Year honor, and hosts popular Zoom tastings at online-tastings.co.uk.

Reflecting on his choices for 2023, he notes that his palate may have developed more of a preference for Bourgogne.

“Last year there were several red Bordeaux wines in my list, including Red of the Year, but this year sees not a single one. It reflects tasting opportunities that I had, but also that I am not quite so obsessed with Bordeaux as I once was. Great Bordeaux is still a thing of absolute beauty, but I guess my tastes have swung to slightly lighter reds, whites and sparkling wines.”
