“Beautiful stuff! Easily Grand Cru level,” says top wine writer Jamie Goode
Receiving a review from Dr Jamie Goode is never anything other than fascinating. This is the wine writer and lecturer who champions the world’s understanding of Regenerative Viticulture, so he is one of the most perfect people to understand what we do here at Château de Pommard. His understanding of flavor and structure is second to none.
He has tasted hundreds of wines on camera and posts numerous times per week on his instagram page, and we were supremely delighted to see one of our wines on his radar.
Dr Goode, who released his book Regenerative Viticulture in April of this year, tasted our 2021 Clos Marey-Monge Monopole on 14 December. It’s fair to say he was impressed. His post read: “So impressed with this wine! It’s the 2021 Pommard Clos Marey-Monge from @chateaudepommard in @vinsdebourgogne – this is easily Grand Cru level even though it’s a village wine. Beautiful stuff.”
In the accompanying video, he began by commenting on the stylishness of the bottle and then got straight into the nose.
“Beautiful aromatics,” he said. “Aah this is fantastic, it has sweet raspberries and cherries, sour cherry edge, lovely savoury detail, a bit of iodine, a bit of spice, even a hint of rosemary. Very fragrant, really interesting.”
At first sip, Dr Goode is in heaven. “Beautiful tension…it reminds me of a very fine Barolo.”
“Good structure, nice tannins,” he continued, “and lovely fine, pure, but slightly grunty iodine and earth and spice undercurrent, which gives a beautiful savoury dimension to this wine.”
His command of aroma and flavor compounds is well documented but he also gives us an overall vision of our 2021 flagship cuvée.
“Overall this is about pure fruit,” he said. “If i’m sounding quite enthusiastic about this wine it’s because I am! This is really top notch red Bourgogne. This is fantastic.”
And his conclusion on our Monopole 2021? “Perfumed, structured, delightful now but with the potential for aging as well.”
Thank you, Jamie! We’re so happy that you loved it.
