Making Burgundy Affordable Again: Pommard by Château de Pommard
French wine exports lost more than $1 billion in value last year, according to Reuters, with Burgundy among the regions most exposed. The weakness is not only economic; it is generational. In the United States and the United Kingdom, the world’s most influential wine markets, young wine lovers are drinking less Burgundy. They aspire to it, but they can’t afford it. They want wines that are organic and made without chemicals, but only 6% of vineyards worldwide are certified organic, according to the OIV.
Crafted for restaurants
We’re launching a new wine primarily for restaurants, designed to bring Burgundy back to the glass in fine dining around the world. Priced at 50 euros per bottle in select wine shops around the world, and most importantly at €15 per glass in restaurants, Pommard by Château de Pommard delivers what both the trade and consumers have been asking for: an affordable Burgundy made in living soil, with respect for people and the planet.
“Consumers should not have to give up on Burgundy simply because it has become unaffordable,” said Michael Baum, CEO and Propriétaire. “It keeps Burgundy on the wine list, by the glass, and within reach of a new generation.”
Clean and timeless, the label was designed to be instantly recognizable and to age with elegance. We have chosen a classic Burgundy bottle, both practical for transport and efficient for storage. The cuvée is also available in magnum format at an attractive price point.
A return to the roots and spirit of Pommard
This new cuvée was born from a clear and powerful ambition: to let the brilliance of the Pommard appellation shine through. As the historic birthplace of the Château, it was only fitting to focus on what matters most: what has defined the estate’s reputation for over 300 years —the Pommard of Château de Pommard.
The wine
For the 2023 vintage, Pommard by Château de Pommard is sourced from three carefully selected plots: Émilie, Micault, and part of Grands Esprits. These vines were chosen for their ability to express the style and character we envisioned for this wine.
Our goal was to craft a Pinot Noir that is elegant and fruit-forward, supported by a smooth, approachable tannic structure. It reflects the true identity of Pommard while maintaining finesse and nuance. Every detail, from the extraction method to the maceration time and cap management, was carefully adapted to allow a gentle, slow release of aromas.
We also took a thoughtful approach to aging. Only a small percentage of new oak barrels was used, with light to medium toasting, to preserve the purity of the fruit. This brings just a subtle touch of toast, enhancing the wine’s aromatic complexity without overpowering its natural expression.
